About Johnson County, Tennessee

Welcome to Johnson County, Tennessee—a close-knit rural community located in the Appalachian Mountains of Northeast Tennessee. Surrounded by remarkable natural beauty and shaped by generations of hardworking people, Johnson County is a place where history, heritage and community remain important parts of everyday life.

Our History

Johnson County was officially organized in 1836 from a portion of Carter County and was named in honor of Thomas Johnson, an early settler and prominent citizen of the region. The first session of the County Court was held at Pleasant Grove School House on May 2, 1836.

The county seat was originally named Taylorsville in honor of Colonel James P. Taylor. In 1885, the name was changed to Mountain City, reflecting its location within one of Tennessee’s highest mountain valleys.

Johnson County’s history is deeply rooted in agriculture, traditional Appalachian culture, timber production and manganese mining. The arrival of the railroad during the early 1900s helped expand the county’s timber and mining industries and connected the area with growing regional markets. History of Johnson County
